so two days before i my birthday i was chatting with d and she mentioned that she had some awesome horse race tickets and after the races there was a weezer concert. i had just been talking earlier in the week about how cool it would be to go to some horse races. fate? yes. she had a spare ticket. fate? yes. so i booked some flights and blah blah blah... great birthday! below are pics from the adventure

i read this sign out loud as 'oceanside harbor doctor' and was having a really hard time figuring out what it meant... dur dur durrrrr

i was really surprised how large horse tracks are... and i never knew they could move the gates. neato. i didn't bet on any horses because I HAD NO IDEA WHAT ANYTHING MEANT. d tried her best to teach me the lingo but my brain was not computing. numbers and math junk.

there were this many people in every direction at the weezer concert

my running joke was that we were actually seeing the worst wu-tang clan concert ever performed. 'cause of the 'w' and whatnot... hilarious, i know.

it took us an hour and a half just to get out of the parking lot after the weezer concert. nice.

who has the money to buy these houses?? it's insane how much i want one.

my lovely friend d with whom i stayed and celebrated the big two seven. we saw some horse races - red scare was my favorite horse. while waiting in the parking lot after the races / concert d was bugged "what the eff! i just want a dr. pepper! gooooooo!" d and i are dr pepper lovers. we also got babaganoosh. d and i are not babaganoosh lovers. she and her fam sang happy birthday to me at the OC fair with some candles in fried oreos! i almost shed a tear it was so tender.

jcb and i hunted down this hole in the wall taco joint - 'el toro bravo.' it was super ghetto. that's spanish for 'super delicious.' i could only eat one taco but jcb pounded this whole thing and some flower water. hibiscus or something like that

my sister sent me a link to this amazingly talented artist who works as an animator and illustrator out in CA. i am soon to be the proud owner of these gems. they're on tabloid sized paper which i am excited about! they'll look great framed and up with my other art

i like themed pieces. these are of some hawaiian gods. i've never actually been to hawaii - but it's on my list of things to do.

i just couldn't resist this one. so graphic designy

been off the radar for a bit here - working full time at mccann erickson on some big name clients with some fancy pants campaigns, teaching night classes in motion design at UVU, doing some freelance from time to time, and working on some personal projects (i'll be making some posts in the very near future on a new film i am working on called 'alarmie.')

so i got myself a trial version of painter. i watched a light theory DVD that a buddy at work let me borrow. the dude explaining the concepts kept using painter and it looked rad - so i thought i'd give it a try. the brushes are a lot more natural than photoshop but i'm not real comfortable with the UI still. only time will tell. i just whipped this up while watching an NBA game

i was working on some art for a charity auction. initially, i really struggled my way though some concepts. then one night i was watching 'romeo + juliet' ---> the one directed by Baz Luhrmann (strictly ballroom, moulin rouge, australia) and then it hit. i thought i'd post my 'process' (aka - the idea i started with vs the final images) just for kicks. the first two images aren't nearly completed... i kinda just dropped them and moved on.

these two are meant to go side by side when framed

i failed to mention that i gold leafed parts of these as well - which made them super rad looking

i put this map together with the help of my father about two years ago when i was living down in LA - it was so i could keep track of all of the design houses down there : i had this great little system set up of where i had applied - any contacts i had at each studio with phone numbers - which demo reel and resume of mine they had of file - and when the last communication i had with them was.

feel free to use this map in your own research - no guarantee the contacts listed are still there though. it's an industry of studio hoppers

i am convinced that successful studios are ones that treat people well - even if they are a punk kid with little experience trying to nudge his ways into the big leagues

i'm messing around with AE shortcuts to creating molecular level geometry - this is 3D - one cool thing that i am playing around right now is with the individual particles having transparencies and images inside of those transparencies (if that makes sense...) ---> that way when these all overlap it'd super organic looking. you can rotate this guy in z space and/or use it as a custom particles within another particle system. render time on these frames was about 20 seconds each, and they react to 3D lights

when passion pit's debut album came out last year - there was a promo for the first day of sales: the entire album was 4 dollars. i bought it.

this year broken bells did the same thing - 4 dollar album for the first day. and they are blowing up the charts.

i hope the trend continues - it's a clever way for bands to reward the fans who listened to them before they get huge.

so the utah jazz just announced their new colors and a secondary logo. in my opinion - the logo is not very good. i mean the concept is fine - but the execution is kinda meh. i've gone through really quick and fixed all the little things that were driving me nuts about the logo (rounded edges meeting hard edges, weird letter z's, peculiar tangents) to see what it would look like

the j is still looking a little funky where the tail meets the basketball. but i literally did this in five minutes - but you know that for the 15k that they paid (minimum), i'd gladly take 2k and make it look right.

this guy's name is bill clegg - he is an agent, not a cool spy one, but one that 'takes care' of aspiring authors. this guy one day goes AWOL and bails on all his clients, they all sign right quick with other agents and go on with life. well, this dude randomly appears back in the game out of nowhere and coaxes the majority of his old clients back to him from the agents that took them in when mr clegg disappeared. it would seem that he treated his people really well when they were with him.

what is it?

"Contrary to popular belief, Lorem Ipsum is not simply random text. It has roots in a piece of classical Latin literature from 45 BC, making it over 2000 years old. Richard McClintock, a Latin professor at Hampden-Sydney College in Virginia, looked up one of the more obscure Latin words, consectetur, from a Lorem Ipsum passage, and going through the cites of the word in classical literature, discovered the undoubtable source. Lorem Ipsum comes from sections 1.10.32 and 1.10.33 of "de Finibus Bonorum et Malorum" (The Extremes of Good and Evil) by Cicero, written in 45 BC. This book is a treatise on the theory of ethics, very popular during the Renaissance. The first line of Lorem Ipsum, "Lorem ipsum dolor sit amet..", comes from a line in section 1.10.32."

why do we use it?

but then didn't.

so at the turn of the century saab was in need of an entry level 'luxury sports hatchback' or some weird niche like that - catch was, they needed it right quick. so instead of building one from the ground up - they went to GM (who owned a fat share of saab at this time) and asked for some help. GM set some stuff up with their buddy subaru. one thing led to another and in 2005 this little collaboration car was born. fondly called the 'saaburu' ---- this car was build around the WRX - it's got the same engine and the same frame (minus a few modifications.) saab redesigned the interior with a swedish minimalist mentality (except for the ignition being in the dashboard which is very un-saab like) so basically this is the sexy sister cousin of the WRX. well, turns out that the niche they thought was going to be huge wasn't. i bet if they were to try again it'd do well (considering all the hipsters buying moded scions at the price of BMW's) there were two versions of this car available - the linear (aka crap) and the super dope aero. in 2005 8,000 of these cars were made. less than 4k of them aeros. in 2006 about 4,000 cars were made, half of which were aeros. 2007 - they were discontinued. soooo - these are super beastly to try and get your hands on. well, i found one. in colorado - it was an alright deal, not a great deal and i was super pumped - i called up all the people (my insurance people, the dealer in colorado, my father, blah blah) and had a deal all cut and ready to sign this weekend in which i would be picking up the vehicle and trading in my mazda. ... well i started getting really really anxious about it, i mean like 200 percent more anxious than one should be, and i had no real reason. so i'm taking this as a cue from the universe that something's not in place and to not go through with the deal. mixed feelings about this. it's like the kid that really wants a toy - but it's one of those mystery 5 dollar grab bags at the cash register. is it worth my cash money? is it gonna be as awesome as the toy i already have? do i even need a new toy? i was always the kid that would have issues buying my 'magic the gathering' cards because i hated not knowing if i was gonna get the awesome 'rare' card i wanted or not. i'm not a big fan of 'luck of the draw' - it seems like a foolsih concept to me. who knows - maybe it woulda been an awesome car to have, and maybe who cares - what i've got now rocks

since then, subaru has put a lot of design work into the WRX hatchback and it's looking pretty fly - they probably realized how crappy their designs were compared to saab's based on the exact same frame and engine back in 2005. this is the 2008(9?) WRX

last week i was really hungry during a meeting at work - and as usual - i was doodling. i believe that during the meeting we were talking about some blood transfusion thing, and that got me thinking about vampires (which in turn got me thinking about buffy the vampire slayer going berserk on edward: but that's another doodle.) - thus, this little dude came out with fangs.

well, the little doodle managed to sneak it's way into my briefcase, and then into my scanner, and then photoshop (where it got a little love,) and then onto my blog.
